Under Horizon Europe, the European Commission continues to support research and innovation to protect and restore soils through the EU Mission A Soil Deal for Europe. The 2026 calls for proposals represent a key step in translating this ambition into concrete projects, with a strong focus on soil health, resilience and sustainable land management across diverse ecosystems.

The 2026 work program includes both single-stage and two-stage calls, offering different entry points for applicants. The single-stage call (HORIZON-MISS-2026-05), launched on 4 February 2026, features four topics and an indicative budget of €33 million. It covers a range of issues, including the role of soils in antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic biosynthesis. Proposals must be submitted by 23 September 2026, with selected projects expected to move to grant signature in May 2027.

In parallel, a two-stage call (HORIZON-MISS-2026-05-two-stage) was launched on 12 February 2026, with a larger indicative budget of €48 million. This call focuses on the development of living labs in managed forests, natural and semi-natural areas and specific biogeographical regions such as Alpine and Atlantic zones. Applicants first submit a short proposal assessing excellence and impact, followed by a full proposal for shortlisted candidates. The two-stage structure aims to reduce administrative burden while improving the quality of funded projects.

These calls are embedded within the broader Horizon Europe Work Program 2026–2027, which allocates €14 billion to support research careers and innovation aligned with EU priorities, including climate neutrality, environmental protection and sustainable food systems. Dedicated info days and brokerage events have been organized to facilitate participation and foster partnerships among stakeholders.

Overall, the 2026 soil calls highlight the EU’s continued commitment to addressing soil degradation through science-based solutions. By supporting research on soil biodiversity, land use, and innovative management practices, the Soil Mission aims to deliver tangible outcomes, including healthier soils, improved ecosystem services and more resilient agricultural systems across Europe.
