The British Society of Soil Science (BSSS) is one of the leading voices promoting soil research, education and professional standards worldwide. Founded in 1947 and established as a charity in 2010, the Society brings together academics, practitioners and policymakers with a shared commitment to safeguarding soils.

BSSS emphasises that soils are central to agriculture, construction, conservation - even archaeology- while also shaping policy on climate change, biodiversity and land management. Its mission is to secure the future of soils by raising awareness of their critical role in delivering the UN Sustainable Development Goals and by supporting measures to halt and repair soil degradation. To achieve this, the Society promotes collaboration across sectors, hosts conferences and training, and provides members with access to leading journals including the European Journal of Soil Science and Soil Use and Management.

A milestone moment for the Society came in 2022, when it hosted the World Congress of Soil Science in Glasgow. The event drew 1,700 delegates from across the globe to address pressing issues such as sustainable soil management, preserving ecosystems, and tackling climate change. The in 2021 obtained Observer status at UN Climate Change Conferences has further strengthened the Society’s international voice.

Over its history, BSSS has developed initiatives to strengthen the profession. Since the 1980s, it has published two leading journals, and in 2008 it introduced “Working with Soil” competency documents defining the qualifications and skills required by soil scientists. The Society’s merger with the Institute of Professional Soil Scientists in 2010 marked another turning point, solidifying its role as a registered charity with HRH The Duke of Gloucester as Patron. Its 70th and 75th anniversaries were marked with dedicated publications and events, highlighting both achievements and evolving challenges.

Today, BSSS continues to promote its #Grounded campaign, underlining that soil is not just part of our past but central to present and future sustainability. By maintaining strong ties with members, advancing public and scientific education, and shaping global conversations, the Society plays a crucial role in ensuring that soils remain at the heart of solutions to environmental and societal challenges.
